방탄소년단의 팬덤 ‘아미’의 사례를 통해 본 연구에서는 팬덤 정체성과 팬 행동주의에 대한 기존의 단선적인 논의를 비일관성을 중심으로 재구성하고, 행위자-네트워크 이론을 통해 팬덤 정체성을 물질적 배치의 차원으로 이해하여 팬 행동주의를 현행적인 것으로 바라본다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 팬덤 정체성을 행위자-네트워크의 효과이자, 행위자들이 결절된 또 하나의 행위자로 개념화한다. 이때 팬덤 정체성은 계속해서 안정화되어야 하는 행위자이며, 팬 행동주의는 그러한 안정화를 위한 현재 진행 중인 전략이다. 아미의 경우, 이들의 역사는 특히 사회 정의를 실현하고자 노력한 실행들로 정의되어 왔다. 아미라는 팬덤에 대하여 행동주의는 팬덤의역사와 대응된다. 아미는 자신의 경계를 정의하고 보존하는 과정에서 자신의 행동주의라는 자신의 역사를 동원했고, 행동주의는 사건들의 연쇄 안에서 형성된 가치를 실현함으로써 자신을 강화하는 데 아미를 동원했다. 그런 맥락에서 아미라는 팬덤 정체성은 팬덤과 팬 행동주의 사이의 상호구성 관계를 보여주는 하나의 사례다.
본 연구는 팬덤을 소재로 삼고 있지만, 팬덤 연구에 그치기보다 정체성과 행동주의의 관계 자체에 대해서 고찰하며, 기존 사회이론과 행위자-네트워크 이론 사이에서마찰을 빚는 개념인 ‘역사’를 하나의 블랙박스로 개념화함으로써 마찰을 해소하고자 한다. 소수-되기, 혹은 총체화하는 힘에 대한 전쟁으로서의 행동주의는 사회를더 나은 방향으로 만들어가는 가치와 결부된 행위이다. 팬 행동주의, 나아가 행동주의를 하나의 행위자-네트워크로 재회집하는 것은 더 나은 사회를 향한 희망 혹은낙관을 잠재성이나 가능성의 영역에 남겨두는 대신, 그것을 위해 가장 가까운 일상에서 저항의 물질적 근거를 마련하는 일이 될 수 있을 것이다.
Through the case of BTS’s fandom “A.R.M.Y.,” this study reconfigures the existing linear discussion of fandom identity and fan activism by centering on incoherence, and looks at fan activism as actual by understanding fandom identity as a dimension of material assemblage through actor-network theory.
To this end, this study conceptualizes fandom identity as an effect of actornetworks and as another actor in which actors are punctualised. Fandom identity is then an actor that needs to be continually stabilized, and fan activism is an ongoing strategy for that stabilization. In the case of A.R.M.Y., their history has been defined by actions that have sought to realize social justice in particular. For the fandom A.R.M.Y., activism corresponds to the history of the fandom. A.R.M.Y. has mobilized its history of activism in the process of defining and preserving its boundaries, and activism has mobilized A.R.M.Y. in empowering itself by realizing the values formed within the chain of events. In this context, A.R.M.Y.’s fandom identity is an example of the mutually constitutive relationship between fandom and fan activism.
Although this study takes fandom as its subject, it does not stop at the study of fandom, but examines the relationship between identity and activism itself, and seeks to resolve the friction by conceptualizing ‘history’ as a black-box, a concept that creates friction between existing social theory and actor-network theory. Activism as a becoming-minoritarian or a war against totalizing power is an act that is connected to the value of making society better. Reassembling fan activism, further, activism itself as an actor-network, can be a way to create a material basis for resistance in everyday world, instead of leaving hope or optimism for a better society in the realm of the potential or possible.
